The gym
was in the field house, the longest building I had ever seen. I heard later it had been a military building
on a base in Northern Idaho. The college
bought and moved it in pieces to E.W.C.
On one end was a large swimming pool and on the other a dirt floor track
area. The basketball court was in the
center with locker rooms and various class rooms surrounding it. This photo was obviously taken during the winter with plenty of snow.
The
gym was huge. I was told it was one of
the finest basketball courts in the Northwest. The court floor was sunk below
the bleacher style seating level, so everyone had a good view of the game.
Red was on the court working with half dozen players. He motioned to me and said, “Come join us.” For the next hour and a half we shot baskets, ran passing drills and worked one-on-one. Two of the fellows were new prospective players like me. The other four guys were sophomores who had been playing on the junior varsity. We had a good workout that had all of us perspiring. The shower felt great and as we were getting dressed Red came in with meal tickets. He explained that meals were served in the New Dorm, (later named Louise Anderson Hall). It was the girl’s dorm, but the large dinning hall was used by all students.
Red
suggested we gather again for additional work at 3:00 that afternoon. It was noon so we headed for the New Dorm to
try the college food.
The
dining hall was located on a first floor corner of the New Dorm that faced the
main campus. It was a good sized room
with a wall of large windows that gave a sweeping view of other campus
buildings. We lined up with tray in hand
and sampled their lunch. The food was
good and plentiful with a variety of drinks.
The desert table held ample servings of two or three choices of deserts. Refills of drinks were provided and after the
work out we had, all of us took advantage of that.
